Claim Your Artistry by Adding a Watermark
Did you know a kid, when you were growing up, who had those perfect little labels sewn into her shirts when she went to sleep-away camp: “Susie Nitworth”? Those shirts were not going to show up in someone else’s cabin! Watermarking your photos is kinda like that.
A watermark is your first line of defense when it comes to unauthorized use of the photo by someone who discovers it on the web. It also offers a way to market your organization: the more times a viewer comes across your logo over a great photo, the more it will positively reflect and build your brand.
Following are three ways to create and place watermarks on your photos.
PLACING AN EXISTING LOGO ONTO YOUR PHOTO
If you already have a logo, here’s how to go about plopping it onto your photos in PicMonkey.
Step 1. Open your photo and logo in the Editor

Open your photo in the editor. Click the Overlays tab (the icon showing a heart, comic bubble, and starburst in the far left column).
Click “Your Own” at the top of the panel and select your logo image from the files on your computer to open it.
Step 2. Fade and place

In the Overlay palette, adjust the “Fade” slider to 30 – 60%, then close the palette.
Click and drag the image to where you want it on the photo. You can adjust the size once the image is placed, by clicking a corner circle and dragging it inward or outward.
PLACING A TEXT-ONLY LOGOTYPE ONTO A PHOTO
If you need a quick-and-dirty way to get a company name or URL over your photo and you won’t need to do it again soon, this is a good method.

Open your photo in the editor. Click the Text tab (the “P” icon in the far left column) and click inside the box to start typing your text. Choose your color by using the color picker in the Text palette. Or you can type in a color’s the hex value (the six digits/letters in the upper right corner). White is “FFFFFF.”
Adjust the “Fade” slider to 30 – 60%, then close the palette. Click and drag the image to where you want it on the photo. Adjust the size once the image is placed by clicking a corner circle and dragging it inward or outward.
Tip: If you find a color you like using the color picker, write down the hex value so you can match it later, if you want.
MAKING A TRANSPARENT IMAGE TO WATERMARK MANY PHOTOS
If you know you’ll be watermarking a bunch of photos, create a transparent image that you’ll be able to use for all of them. Your watermarking will be more consistent, and you’ll have less digit fatigue!
Step 1. Make a single-cell Collage

Open Collage and click the Layouts tab (the grid icon in the far left column). Click “Create your own” at the top of the panel, and a single 1024 x 1024 cell will appear. Don’t worry about the size for now.
Step 2. Make it transparent and save

Click the Background tab. Click the box next to “Transparent background.” Don’t freak out: it’s still there! The dotted lines show the perimeter of your transparent background.
Click “Save” on the top toolbar, give your background a name, and save it as a “.png” file. Close out of Collage (the “x” button in the upper right corner).
Step 3. Create logo in Editor

Open your transparent background file in the Editor (click “Edit a photo” on the home page and select the file from wherever you saved it on your computer). Don’t freak out: it will appear invisible at this point, but it’s there! Click the Text tab and then the “Add Text” button on the top of the menu. Keep the text tool in the middle of your (invisible!) background while you work on it.
Try different typefaces to see which one works best for the letters in your name. Some typefaces have particular letters that (like g’s) that are tricky. You want one that’s legible and reflects the personality of your brand.
Our Help center has a short article on using the Text tool.
Choose a color for it (see notes above). Pick a size that’s fairly large—72 point is good—you can reduce it when it’s placed on your image later. Check out our newly expanded menu of overlays and see if one of them would be right for your logo; if so add it!
Step 4. Crop it

Go to the Basics tab, and click “Crop.” Crop your image tightly around the periphery of the logo.
Step 5. Save it

Be sure to save it as a “.png” file; this file format retains its transparency. When you place it onto images, try to be consistent about where you put it each time.
Wah-lah! You did it, Fancy Pants! Who ever said you weren’t a slick professional, totally on top of your game?
This is AWESOME! Thnx PM!! Quick Q- is it true that we should also (always) merge our layers at the end (after we’ve added our watermark)? I’ve heard some people can actually “remove” that last layer/watermark :/ so I was just checking w/the experts
.. Thnx again!
Hi Annie. What you heard is not true! You don’t need to merge layers unless there’s another effect you want to apply next, and you want it to apply to ALL the layers at once. This is highly unlikely in the case of a watermark because most people watermark their photos when they’re completely finished editing them.
I like the idea of the transparent watermark. I’m going to play with that.
Thanks!
Because when you go to OVERLAY you can choose a FILE . HTH
My comment is to WONDERING (sorry)
It worked! I can’t wait to try it out. Thanks for this great information.
If you can only open one image at a time, how can we place the second image (watermark) on the image we wish to watermark?
Because when you go to OVERLAY you can choose a FILE . HTH
Great tips! Thank you!
I have a logo I have already made but when I add it as an overlay to my photos, it’s a white box. Is there anyway to make my logo transparent? I’ve been using darken blend mode but that only works sometimes.
to make your logo transparent you need to open it in whatever program you made it on and save as a PNG file. I had that problem with the first 5 logos I made probably until a computer savy friend of mine explained it to me. =) Hope this helps!
yes needs to be saved as .png
I opened the logo in Paint and saved it as a Png file. Everytime I try to add it as an overlay to one of my pictures, it’s just the same as always, a white box still. The only thing that seems to work is using darken blend mode but that only works if the picture is light and not dark at all. I feel like no matter what I do I am going round in circles. lol
Hi Isis. Would you jump on over to our Help Center and send a note about it? Should be able to get to the bottom of this… http://help.picmonkey.com/customer/portal/emails/new
You need to make sure that when you open it up that you are actually setting the background to transparent before you save it as a .png file. If the background is white when you save it, and not transparent, it is still going to be white when you place it on other pictures.
Awesome guys! I will be reposting this on my blog. DIY for all! I love that you empower people to rock it online with easy design tools. Love the monkey!
Thanks, Donna! PicMonkey loves being in your corner. Love all the good work you’re doing in the social space.
Oh, many thanks. I was trying to do this for many weeks, but was missing one important step.
Yes I echo somebody’s question above, if we have edited a photo and can only open one photo at a time how can we add the saved watermark? Confused
Because when you go to OVERLAY you can choose a FILE . HTH
To answer Lady S and others who asked how to add the watermark, first open the picture you want to add the watermark to, then click on the Overlay button, choose Add Your Own, and open the file that has the watermark. It should show up and you can resize it bigger or smaller.
Thank you for this! I’ve been typing my rather long business name over and over… genius!
THANK YOU!!!
OMG, had been trying to find a way to do this… Problem solved. thanks heaps
Someone told me how to get the copyright symbol to appear by going to text; typing 1069 while pushing the alt key but it doesn’t work? Is there an alternative way to find it?
Sorry I gave the wrong code above; it was 0169.
Hi Kristin, We also have a copyright symbol in our Overlays. Click on the Overlays tab and open the Symbols set.
WOW! This is awesome…..Ty Ty

I will try to ask this question as best as I can.
I followed the tutorial directions – made a transparent background, made a watermark, saved it. I am wanting my watermark to be clear. I want it to lay over the top of the picture, but for there to be no color – like it would be if a professional photographer sends you a link to look at your proofs, but they don’t want you to make copies of the pictures. The watermark I created is showing up in full color. Am I missing something?
I think I might have figured it out. I changed all of the text to black. Then when I added the watermark to my photo, I increased the fade and chose Overlay and I chose Hard Light on another copy.
Was there an easier way or was this the way to do it? Thanks for any help!
sounds right. Fade is your main control for this, and we always play with those drop down menu options too.
WOW!!! Thank you SO MUCH! That was so ridiculously easy with step-by-step instructions. My new watermark is going to save me so much TIME. Thanks again!
I was wondering where a logo is created. I use Pages as word processing.

OK, so I don’t THINK I’m a stoopid munkey, but I don’t see instructions as to how to batch watermark a large number of photos. I have tinkered, but I can only open one photo at a time and have to go through all the adjustments for each one. How can I set it up for, say, 200 photos and let ‘er rip until all of them have the same watermark?
Sorry, Chris. No can do! Batch editing is something a lot of folks want, so we’ll take a look and see if we can engineer that in the future.
Batching sounds bitchin’! Can I say that on here?
You seem to be getting away with it, but our blogging software is acting kinda nervous and looking over its shoulder constantly. Here’s to living dangerously!
What happened to the beach overlays like the flip flops. beach ball, sunglasses? They were a matching theme. I can’t find them. What hapt?
Sorry, we don’t have them. We’ll make a note that you asked for them. Thanks for checking in.
This is going to save so much time. Thanks!!
I’ve been using picmonkey for a while now and found a link through Carolyn Burch’s blog. I can’t believe how much time I’ve wasted adding a watermark to my pics by adding it to each one from scratch! This tutorial will save me so much time. Thank you!
Thanks guys for this tip, will save me time
Might be a stupid question but will the watermark be there when you print the picture? Do I have to save a copy before I place the watermark to post to the web?
Yes it will, and you need to save the image when you’re satisfied with it, in order to post it to the web.
I had no idea the college feature could be used to create something transparent. This will save me so much time. Thanks so much!!!!!
Thank you so much for this article!!!!
I used this to make a Favicon with a transparent background. Awesome
